CryptoTE

CryptoTE allows you to type in or copy/paste any sort of text you want; then it stores that text data in a secure, Serpent-encrypted container. You can work on any text you want, store anything you want in text files, then walk away safe in the knowledge that all your text is safely stored so that no one else can access it. This makes CryptoTE an ideal choice for anyone who wants to store info in text files and wants to do so in a secure manner.

CryptoTE is available for Windows and Linux-powered machines, as a desktop and portable version. To install the application on your Windows-powered machine, you will have to go through a standard setup process: download a small executable, run it, click through the setup wizard that shows up on the screen. It is, in all fairness, a simple process that goes along smoothly and rapidly.

The interface is just what you would expect from a notepad-like application: a large pane that presents the text you’re working on, shortcuts and a traditional File menu at the top. If you’ve used a text editor before, you would immediately feel at home; and if you haven’t, it should take very little time to get accustomed to the interface.

As mentioned above, CryptoTE brings together text editing functionality and strong cryptography. The application has the following text editing functionality to offer: type in any text you want, copy/paste, find and replace, go to line, insert date and time, show line numbers, whitespace, end of line symbols, indent guide lines, guide line at column 80. All the text data you enter is stored in containers that are encrypted using the Serpent algorithm and compressed using the ZLib algorithm. Said container will be automatically closed after a specific amount of time. That’s not all the security functionality CryptoTE has to offer; the application also comes with a handy built-in password generator.
